Tabuaço
The history of the village of Tabuaço is older than the history of Portugal itself. During Pre- History, several were the civilisations, who have settled and worked in this village, as several Roman villages, shelters and vestiges of working tools, such as pottery tools or wine and olive presses attest. During Middle Age, the ancient Roman village of S. Pedro das Águias sheltered a small community of Cistercian monks.
This community has developed an extremely important role, not only concerning its religious crusades against the Moors and Romans, but also concerning the development of the local economy, since the convent was rich in the culture of wine and fruit, as well as in gastronomy.Tabuaço was witness of several and curious moments in the history of Portugal, which have been being spread from father to son, for many generations. One of the stories is that of the tragic love between the Moorish princess Ardínia and the fearless Christian crusader D. Theon, the other is that of the "Granja do Tedo" Schism, in which the family of Maria Coroada performed a strange cult, which has gained many followers.
The Romanesque period must have been quite prosperous, given the wealth of so many churches and monuments. Therefore, Tabuaço deserves well the designation of "capital of Romanesque". In the 16th century the territory of Tabuaço was constituted by 10 "concelhos", small plots of land, which after the administrative reforms of the 1st half of the 19th century became the current parishes of Tabuaço.
