Ferdinando LIGNANO, è nato a Napoli, dove rientrava nel 1975 dopo una permanenza in Calabria di sei anni.
L'approccio all'arte figurativa avviene nel 1964, con una serie di disegni a china alternando a questa la tempera e successivamente la pittura olio.
La prima personale di pittura risale al 1969, nella Sala Espositiva del Palazzo della PROVINCIA DI CATANZARO.
Seguono numerose esposizioni nei principali centri della CALABRIA, della LUCANIA, della CAMPANIA, della PUGLIA, della LOMBARDIA,...NEW YORK, MIAMI.... Mr Ferdinando Lignano is the artist whose paintings we are going to write about. He was born in Naples, where he came back in 1975 after his staying in Calabria for six years. The artist’s approach towards the figurative art took place in 1964 when he gave life to a series of drawings using first Indian ink then tempera colours and after oil painting. The artist’s first one-man show goes back to 1969; it was in the Town Hall showroom of Catanzaro in Calabria. After this first exhibition, many others took place in the main provinces of Calabria, Lucania, Campania, Puglia, Lombardia....... and in New York. In order to reach a more completed comprehension of the artist’s paintings we will report the opinions some critics have expressed after visiting the exhibitions the artist has taken part in. According to Mrs Marisa Russo (March 4th 2005) “Women in the artist’s pictures are both human subjects and the symbol of Life, Nature, Mother-Earth. As human subjects they are represented as beings completely overcome by the whirl of the contemporary world, with the daily difficulties they are called to face, but ........... if you look at Mr Lignano’s paintings with a practised eye you will see the image of a Renewed Woman. The artist, who is able to give life to his subjects, joined the artistical movement Esasperatismo last year; the Movement has chosen as its logo a dustbin, whose narrow space stands for the social condemnation against the lack of freedom the contemporary society has obliged human beings. Mr Lignano decides to describe this concept through women constrained in a dustbin; “his” women have no freedom and are overwhelmed by external and incontrollable forces. Anyway the expert eye is able to see something more than a metaphorical distortion of women; in fact “his” women expand beyond the limits of those circular forms and give life to a vital dance which is represented through a play of colours. Colours are the overwhelming melody of these dances: the vortex of the pinks among the greens and blues carries “his” women towards a new life. I can see in Mr Lignano’s paintings an optimism which encourages and stimulates at the time all the women to play an active role in our society”.
According to Mrs Aldoina Filangieri di Candida (March 24th 2003) “the artist’s choice of his paintings’ names is not fortuitous. The Voyage is the show’s name he took part in 2003. The Voyage is the leitmotiv which we can find through the whole artist’s work. “His” titles tell us all about the artist’s paintings but at the same time they tell themselves and other stories. His titles have got a poetical autonomy and seem to stay there in a relation of passing and helpful empathy towards the paintings they refer to. The Voyage as a physical travel through the small villages of Calabria and Basilicata ....... in his Landscapes; the Voyage as the means through which the artist explores his own life through an objective observation of human moods ................ in his Linoleografie; the Voyage as a research of the forms through the study of human body ........... in his Naked Women; the Voyage as the artist’s inner sorrow, a sorrow which has opened new frontiers in his being, a sorrow we approach to on tiptoe to feel only the sweetness of its whispering ........................ in his Virtual Images”.
